Overview
Gram-positive bacteria are a major group of bacteria distinguished by a thick peptidoglycan cell wall that retains the crystal violet stain used in the Gram staining procedure, causing them to appear purple under the microscope. This structural feature sets them apart from Gram-negative bacteria and influences their susceptibility to certain antibiotics and disinfectants. Gram-positive organisms include many medically, industrially, and agriculturally important genera such as Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Enterococcus, Bacillus, and Lactobacillus; some are part of the normal human microbiota or are used in fermentation and biotechnology, while others are significant pathogens capable of causing infections ranging from skin and soft-tissue disease to pneumonia and bloodstream infection. Their identification by Gram staining and culture remains a foundational step in clinical and environmental microbiology. Research relevant to this area within the journal's broad scope includes molecular confirmation and identification of Staphylococci strains isolated from a hospital setting and study of the response of Porphyromonas to ultrasonication, alongside work on antimicrobial agents active against bacteria, all of which engage with the identification, behavior, and control of bacterial organisms. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to microbiology, bacterial identification, and antimicrobial applications.
