Overview
Bipolar disorder is a chronic psychiatric condition defined by recurrent episodes of mood disturbance that alternate between elevated states, mania or hypomania, and depression, with intervening periods of relative stability. Manic episodes involve elevated or irritable mood, increased energy and activity, reduced need for sleep, and impaired judgement, while depressive episodes feature persistent low mood, anhedonia, and functional impairment; the pattern and severity distinguish bipolar I, bipolar II, and related presentations. Its pathophysiology involves genetic susceptibility together with neurochemical, circadian, and neural-circuit dysregulation, and it is commonly accompanied by comorbidity and elevated suicide risk. Effective management combines pharmacological mood stabilisation with psychosocial interventions that support recovery and adherence. Peer-reviewed work relevant to this topic examines psychosocial interventions in bipolar disorder, psychosocial factors and comorbidity associated with recovery, and broader themes in mood disorder, antidepressant mechanisms, and rumination-focused and other psychological therapies. These contributions span psychiatry and clinical psychology, addressing the course, comorbidity, and treatment of the disorder and the psychosocial supports that improve outcomes, an area in which the journal publishes peer-reviewed research on mental health and rehabilitation.
