Overview
Anxiety is a sustained state of apprehension marked by excessive, persistent worry and physiological arousal that is disproportionate to any actual threat and that impairs everyday functioning. Clinically it spans a family of disorders including generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and specific phobias, and it frequently co-occurs with depression. Core features combine cognitive symptoms such as anticipatory worry and difficulty concentrating with somatic signs including restlessness, muscle tension, autonomic activation, and disturbed sleep. Underlying mechanisms implicate dysregulation of fear-processing circuits centered on the amygdala and prefrontal cortex, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity reflected in cortisol responses, and neuropeptide and neurotransmitter signaling, with cholecystokinin among the modulators studied in the context of fear and panic. Research in this area addresses measurement and prevalence across populations such as students and healthcare workers, the interplay of anxiety with depression, personality, and suicidal ideation, perinatal and postpartum mood and anxiety disorders, and the neurodevelopmental origins of anxiety-like behavior. Intervention studies examine pharmacological and psychological approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapy, somatosensory and stress-reduction techniques, and complementary methods. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research examining the assessment, mechanisms, and management of anxiety across clinical and community settings.
