Overview

Epidemiology is the scientific study of how diseases and other health-related conditions are distributed across populations and of the factors that determine their occurrence. It quantifies how often illnesses arise, who is affected, and where and when cases cluster, and it identifies the risk factors, exposures, and modes of transmission that drive patterns of disease. Using measures such as incidence and prevalence together with study designs ranging from surveillance and retrospective reviews to cohort and case-control investigations, epidemiologists characterize trends by geography, age, and other demographic features and assess the burden of conditions in defined communities. This evidence guides outbreak response, screening programs, and public health policy aimed at preventing or mitigating the spread of disease. Peer-reviewed research within this collection illustrates the breadth of the field: studies report the epidemiology and histopathological diagnosis of thyroid diseases in a Riyadh university hospital, the management of seasonal influenza outbreaks in long-term care facilities in Ireland, temporal trends in syphilis in the United Arab Emirates, and malaria and typhoid fever coinfection in Burkina Faso, among other population-based analyses. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access articles relevant to epidemiological methods and the surveillance, distribution, and control of disease.
