Overview
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a type of cardiovascular disease in which the coronary arteries supplying oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle become narrowed or obstructed, most commonly through atherosclerosis, leading to reduced blood flow and potential damage to the myocardium. It is one of the most common causes of death in industrialized countries and a major source of disability and premature mortality. High Blood Pressure is a central modifiable risk factor for CHD, alongside diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle, because sustained elevated arterial pressure accelerates arterial damage and plaque formation. Clinical consequences range from angina and reduced exercise tolerance to myocardial infarction and sudden cardiac death, and management combines lifestyle change, blood-pressure and risk-factor control, medication, and interventional procedures. In this blood-pressure-focused collection, the journal publishes research touching on genetic polymorphisms and CHD risk, outcomes of percutaneous coronary intervention in very elderly patients, heart failure in family medicine, dietary patterns and chronic-disease risk factors, the cardiovascular impact of smoking and vaping, microRNA therapeutic strategies in ischemic heart disease, and assessment of cardiac function, illustrating how Blood Pressure and related risk factors intersect with the development and management of coronary disease.
