Overview

Glial cells are the non-neuronal cells of the nervous system that support, protect, and maintain neurons in the brain and spinal cord. They include several types, such as astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and microglia in the central nervous system, each with distinct roles: providing structural support and nutrients, forming the myelin that insulates nerve fibers, regulating the chemical environment around neurons, and contributing to immune defense and repair. Far from being merely passive support, glial cells actively shape how the nervous system develops, signals, and responds to injury and disease. Within the study of the brain, spinal cord, and central-nervous-system disease, glial cells are central to understanding both normal function and pathology. Research in this subject area has examined oligodendrocyte development and the signaling pathways involved, the role of astrocyte-targeted molecules in regulating brain blood flow, and glial-related processes in neurological conditions. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to glial cells and their roles in supporting neurons, myelination, and central-nervous-system function and disease.
