Overview

Breastfeeding is the provision of human milk to an infant directly from the breast or by expressed milk, supplying tailored nutrition together with immunological, hormonal, and bioactive components that support infant growth, immune development, and maternal-infant bonding. Human milk composition is dynamic, influenced by maternal physiology, circadian factors such as melatonin, and feeding practice, and exclusive breastfeeding is widely studied in relation to infant morbidity, particularly diarrhoeal and other childhood illnesses. Research relevant to this area examines breastfeeding and melatonin in the context of perinatal health, the role of religion in the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of lactating mothers regarding infant feeding, and the determinants and beliefs surrounding exclusive breastfeeding among low-income women. Allied work addresses programmes to promote perceived milk adequacy, the prevalence and risk factors of diarrhoea in young children, maternal nutrition during pregnancy and lactation, and growth monitoring and stunting in early childhood. These studies integrate maternal and child nutrition, lactation physiology, public health, and behavioural science to clarify how feeding practice and its social determinants shape infant and maternal outcomes. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on infant feeding, lactation, and the nutritional and public-health dimensions of breastfeeding.
