Overview
Pregnancy is the physiological state in which a developing embryo and then fetus is carried within the uterus, typically spanning about forty weeks from conception to birth and progressing through three trimesters of growth and maturation. It involves extensive maternal adaptations across the endocrine, cardiovascular, metabolic, and immune systems to support fetal development while maintaining maternal health. Research in this area examines the nutritional foundations of a healthy pregnancy, including awareness and adequacy of nutrition during gestation and the consequences of deficiencies, as well as maternal outcomes in conditions such as gestational diabetes and surgically altered metabolism. Particular attention is given to the social and behavioral dimensions of pregnancy, including coping among pregnant students, teenage and adolescent pregnancy, decision-making around unwanted pregnancy, and health-seeking behavior for conditions such as malaria during gestation. Clinical study also addresses complications and uncommon presentations, including ectopic and abnormally implanted pregnancies, obstetric emergencies, and pharmacological considerations for medication use in pregnant patients. The significance of pregnancy as a field of study lies in its profound implications for maternal and child health, encompassing preventive care, management of coexisting disease, and the social determinants that shape outcomes. Comprehensive understanding supports safer pregnancies, better-informed care, and improved well-being for both mother and child.
