Overview
School psychology is an applied field of psychology focused on the learning, development, and mental health of children and adolescents within educational settings. School psychologists assess students' cognitive, academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs and collaborate with teachers, families, and administrators to design interventions that support learning and well-being. Their work spans the identification of learning and behavioral difficulties, the delivery of counseling and behavioral support, crisis response, and the promotion of safe and inclusive school environments. By combining knowledge of psychology and education, school psychologists help students overcome barriers to learning and develop the skills they need to succeed. Within the context of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, school psychology applies structured, evidence-based techniques to address emotional and behavioral concerns in young people in the places where they spend much of their time. Research relevant to this field has documented the use of cognitive behavior therapy in the school setting, including a case study of a nine-year-old boy whose anxiety was expressed as extreme blushing, illustrating how therapeutic methods can be adapted to support children within their educational environment. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to school psychology and the application of cognitive behavioral approaches with children and adolescents.
