Overview
Child health is the field concerned with the physical, mental, developmental, and social well-being of children from the prenatal period through adolescence, integrating preventive care, nutrition, growth and development, immunisation, and the management of illness. It recognises that early-life conditions shape lifelong health and that children's needs are distinct from those of adults. The studies gathered here emphasise the determinants of child health in community and population settings. Nutrition and growth are central, including risk factors for stunting among young children, the nutritional status and health outcomes of women and children, and the utilisation of nutrition services for pregnant women and growth-monitoring practices. Maternal and caregiver factors feature strongly, with work on women's empowerment and the integration of maternal and child healthcare, the role of community health workers, and male involvement in routine child immunisation. Infectious disease and mortality are addressed through the prevalence and determinants of childhood diarrhoea and multilevel modelling of child mortality. Injury and environmental exposures appear in studies of unintentional childhood injury and caregiver knowledge of early management, and of the impact of computer use on child health. Together these contributions present child health as a discipline spanning nutrition, immunisation, maternal and caregiver influences, infectious disease, and injury prevention, with a consistent focus on the social and health-system factors that shape children's outcomes.
