Overview

Vibration is the repetitive oscillation of a system or particle about an equilibrium position, occurring across mechanical structures, materials, molecules, and biological tissues. At the engineering scale it describes the motion of machines, vehicles, and structures and the forces and energy associated with that motion, while at the molecular scale it refers to the characteristic oscillations of atoms within chemical bonds, which can be measured and interpreted to reveal molecular structure. Studying vibration helps in designing reliable machinery, controlling noise and unwanted motion, and using spectroscopy to identify and characterize substances. Research featured in Current Scientific Research spans both of these dimensions. Applied and mechanical work includes analysis of fingertip force feedback through coded vibration stimulation in grasping tasks and the simulation and analysis of gas turbine operation. A substantial body of molecular work applies vibrational spectroscopy and density functional theory to characterize compounds, including vibrational and spectral analyses of organic molecules, vibronic-mode coupling in the vibrational spectra of tetrodotoxin, and molecular structure studies combining experimental spectra with theoretical computation. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access articles relevant to vibration and vibrational analysis across mechanical and molecular systems.
