Overview

Guided bone regeneration is a surgical technique used to rebuild deficient alveolar bone, most often to create or preserve sufficient volume for dental implant placement. It applies the principle of barrier membranes, which physically exclude faster-growing epithelial and connective-tissue cells from a defect so that slower osteogenic cells can populate the space and form new bone. The protected site is typically filled with a graft material that maintains space and provides a scaffold for healing; options include autogenous bone, allografts, xenografts, and synthetic substitutes such as hydroxyapatite, beta-tricalcium phosphate, and calcium phosphosilicate bioactive materials. Guided bone regeneration addresses bone loss following tooth extraction, trauma, periodontal disease, or long-standing edentulism, and is integral to procedures such as ridge augmentation, socket preservation, and maxillary sinus floor elevation that prepare atrophic sites for fixtures. Treatment planning relies on three-dimensional imaging, including cone-beam computed tomography, to assess residual anatomy, locate vital structures, and identify risk factors before immediate or staged placement. Approaches such as the socket shield technique aim to retain a portion of the natural root to conserve the buccal plate. By combining barrier function, osteoconductive grafting, and careful surgical management, guided bone regeneration restores predictable bone architecture that supports stable, functional, and esthetic implant rehabilitation.
