Overview

Infectious diseases skin infections occur when microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites enter the skin and cause an infection. They can range from minor irritations to more severe illnesses and can be transmitted from person to person. Common skin infections caused by bacteria include cellulitis, impetigo, boils, and staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome. Viral skin infections include chickenpox, shingles, and warts. Fungal skin infections are usually caused by yeast or dermatophytes, such as athlete's foot, ringworm, and jock itch. Early diagnosis and treatment of skin infections is important to prevent the spread of infection and more serious complications. Treatments typically include antibiotics, antifungal, or antiviral medications, along with topical therapies.
