Overview
Embryo development, or embryogenesis, is the sequence of cellular and molecular events through which a fertilized egg, the zygote, transforms into a structured, multicellular embryo. It proceeds through cleavage, a series of rapid mitotic divisions producing the blastomeres and ultimately the blastocyst; gastrulation, which establishes the primary germ layers of ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm; and organogenesis, during which signaling pathways and conserved developmental gene families, such as the Hox genes, pattern the body axes and direct tissue and organ formation. The process is governed by tightly coordinated gene regulation, epigenetic control, cell signaling, and morphogenetic movements, and it is sensitive to maternal, hormonal, and environmental conditions. Understanding embryo development underpins assisted reproductive technologies, including in vitro fertilization and embryo culture and transfer. Research relevant to this topic examines in vitro maturation of immature oocytes, ovarian stimulation protocols and oocyte quality in IVF, the signaling of decidualization and uterine receptivity, evolutionary conservation of Hox genes in vertebrate brain development, and the molecular control of human embryonic development. Related comparative work addresses temperature-dependent embryo growth and stem-cell differentiation factors. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the genetic, cellular, and reproductive biology of embryonic development across human, animal, and experimental model systems.
