Overview
Embryonic development is the process by which a fertilized egg, or zygote, grows and transforms into a structured embryo with the beginnings of tissues, organs, and body systems. It begins with fertilization and proceeds through a series of coordinated stages, including repeated cell division, the formation of distinct cell layers, and the gradual organization of cells into the structures that will become the organism's body. During this process, cells not only multiply but also differentiate into specialized types and arrange themselves according to genetic and molecular signals that establish the body's pattern and axes. Embryonic development is fundamental to the formation of new individuals and is closely studied to understand normal growth, the origins of congenital abnormalities, and the regenerative potential of cells. The signals and gene-regulatory programs that guide development are often shared across species, so research in animal models and in human systems informs one another. Topics within this field include early patterning, the development of specific organs and limbs, and the roles of conserved genes and signaling pathways in shaping the embryo. As part of the journal Embryology, this open-access page gathers peer-reviewed studies relevant to embryonic development, including work on the molecular control of human embryonic development, the development of specific structures, and the conserved genes and pathways that govern early growth and patterning.
