Overview
Sperm, or spermatozoa, are the motile male gametes produced through spermatogenesis in the seminiferous tubules of the testis under hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal control. Each mature spermatozoon is a highly specialized haploid cell comprising a head bearing the condensed nucleus and the acrosome, which houses enzymes for penetrating the oocyte, a midpiece dense with mitochondria that power motility, and a flagellar tail. Sperm quality is assessed through parameters including concentration, motility, morphology, viability, and DNA integrity, and is sensitive to oxidative stress, endocrine disruption, toxicant exposure, and systemic disease, all of which bear on male fertility. Research relevant to this topic examines the antioxidative protective effect of ozone therapy on mitochondria isolated from human sperm, oxidative stress in testicular tissue and the testicular ischemia-reperfusion model, structural changes in the testis induced by hypothyroidism and the protective role of L-carnitine, the effects of pesticide exposure on the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis, and morphological features of testicular biopsies in infertile males. Related work addresses gonadal hormones and male reproductive function under experimental conditions. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on spermatogenesis, sperm physiology and oxidative biology, testicular structure, and male reproductive health, integrating cellular, hormonal, and clinical perspectives on gamete biology and fertility.
