Overview
Pregnancy is the physiological state spanning conception to childbirth, during which a fertilized ovum implants in the uterus and develops through embryonic and fetal stages, typically over about forty weeks divided into three trimesters. It is initiated by fertilization and implantation, signaled by human chorionic gonadotropin, and sustained by progesterone and a cascade of maternal endocrine, cardiovascular, and metabolic adaptations that support fetal growth. Research spans conception and assisted reproduction, the maintenance of pregnancy, maternal nutrition, and the management of pregnancy-related conditions. The studies collected here reflect this range, with emphasis on fertility and early pregnancy: the clinical significance of mature-oocyte yield and ovarian-stimulation protocols in assisted reproduction, signal transduction of hCG inducing decidualization and uterine receptivity, and preconception immunoglobulins and complements as biomarkers in unexplained infertility. Maternal health and nutrition feature in work on nutritional deficiencies after bariatric surgery, awareness of nutrition during pregnancy, and malaria prevention and health-seeking behavior in pregnancy. Psychosocial and adolescent dimensions appear in studies of pregnant students' experiences, decisions around unwanted pregnancy, teenage pregnancy, and antiretroviral pharmacokinetics in pregnancy. Methods range from clinical reproductive studies and biomarker research to cross-sectional surveys and qualitative work. This topic assembles peer-reviewed research on pregnancy physiology, fertility, maternal nutrition, and pregnancy-related health.
