Overview

Platelets are small, cell-fragment components of blood that are essential for hemostasis, the process of stopping bleeding. When a blood vessel is injured, platelets adhere to the damaged site, become activated, and aggregate to form a plug, while also promoting the coagulation cascade that produces a stable fibrin clot. This same clotting capacity, however, can contribute to thrombosis when platelets are activated inappropriately, leading to the formation of clots within intact vessels that may obstruct blood flow and cause serious events such as heart attack or stroke. Understanding how platelets behave in both protective clotting and pathological thrombosis is therefore central to hematology. Research in the journal addresses related aspects of clotting and platelet biology, including studies of hypercoagulability in patients with acute leukemia, inherited bleeding disorders caused by mutations in coagulation factors and regulatory proteins, and the hematological disturbances and clotting abnormalities seen in conditions such as dengue hemorrhagic fever. Together this work illustrates how disturbances in platelet function and coagulation underlie both bleeding and thrombotic disease. This page brings together peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to platelets in thrombosis and the broader study of clotting, hemostasis, and their disorders.
