Overview

The digestive system is the group of organs that work together to break down food, absorb nutrients, and eliminate waste. It runs from the mouth through the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine to the rectum, supported by organs such as the liver and pancreas. As food moves through this tract, it is mechanically and chemically processed so that nutrients can be absorbed into the body and used for energy, growth, and maintenance, while the gut microbiota also plays an important role in digestion and health. Research connected to Human and Animal Intestines and affiliated journals examines many aspects of digestive function and disorder. Studies address surgical correction of reflux disease of the digestive system, the syndrome of excessive bacterial growth in the small intestine, and the histomorphological effects of treatments on the stomach and intestines. Other work explores how knowledge of the microbiota informs diet for health maintenance and what is currently understood about nutrition and the gut microbiome. Together these peer-reviewed, open-access articles gather evidence relevant to the digestive system, including its structure, function, microbiota, and the disorders that affect the intestinal tract.
