The digestive system is the group of organs that work together to break down food, absorb nutrients, and eliminate waste. As food moves through this tract, it is mechanically and chemically processed so that nutrients can be absorbed into the body and used for energy, growth, and maintenance, while the gut microbiota also plays an important role in digestion and health.
