Overview

Oral health is the state of well-being of the mouth and its structures, including the teeth, gums, tongue, and supporting tissues, and their freedom from pain, infection, and disease. It is a fundamental component of overall health, since the mouth serves essential functions in eating, speaking, and social interaction, and conditions such as dental caries, gingivitis, and periodontitis can affect quality of life and have been linked to broader systemic diseases. Maintaining oral health depends on effective prevention, early detection, and treatment of disease, as well as access to dental care and good hygiene practices. Within Human Health Research, oral health is studied across clinical, preventive, and public health dimensions. Work relevant to this field has assessed oral health-related quality of life in a Yemeni population, evaluated the use of fluoride and silver ion compounds in international school-based oral health programs aimed at preventing caries in children, and described clinical and laboratory procedures for two-implant mandibular overdentures to restore function in tooth loss. Further research has examined low-level laser therapy combined with non-surgical periodontal treatment and the role of inflammatory mediators in periodontal disease, as well as methods for capturing tooth morphology to inform restoration design. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to oral health.
