Overview

Public health is the science and practice of protecting and improving the health of populations rather than individuals, through organised efforts to prevent disease, prolong life, and promote wellbeing. It draws on epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental and occupational health, health policy, and the social and behavioural sciences to assess health needs, monitor risks, design interventions, and evaluate their impact. Core functions include surveillance, outbreak investigation and control, immunisation, health protection, health promotion, and addressing the structural and environmental determinants that shape inequities across communities. Research in this area spans the impact of climate change on population health, infection prevention and vector-borne and waterborne disease, tobacco and e-cigarette control, cardiovascular disease knowledge and risk in community settings, HIV care and disclosure, food and environmental safety including aflatoxin exposure, data quality in health facilities, and community health needs assessment using cluster-randomised and survey designs. Studies frequently centre on low-resource and African settings, applying field epidemiology and mixed methods to inform policy and service delivery. By integrating partnerships across health and social services, public health connects clinical care with prevention at scale. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research across these surveillance, prevention, and health-systems dimensions.
