Overview
Blood pressure is the force exerted by circulating blood against the walls of the arteries, conventionally expressed as systolic pressure (during heart contraction) over diastolic pressure (during heart relaxation) and measured in millimeters of mercury. It is a fundamental cardiovascular vital sign, and its sustained elevation, known as hypertension, is a leading modifiable risk factor for stroke, coronary heart disease, heart failure, kidney disease, and premature death. Blood pressure is influenced by cardiac output, vascular resistance, blood volume, arterial stiffness, and neurohormonal regulation, and it varies with age, body weight, diet, physical activity, and genetic factors. Research in this journal examines the measurement and clinical significance of blood pressure across diverse populations, including standards for assessing blood pressure in human research, factors associated with uncontrolled hypertension, and the prevalence, awareness, and treatment of high blood pressure in different countries. Related studies address blood pressure in adolescents and children, vascular changes such as carotid intima-media thickness in young hypertensive patients, the acute pressor responses to isometric resistance exercise, and links between blood pressure, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. Accurate measurement, early detection, and control through lifestyle modification and pharmacotherapy remain central themes in cardiovascular research and prevention.
