Overview

Blood pressure is the force exerted by circulating blood against the walls of the arteries, conventionally expressed as systolic pressure (during heart contraction) over diastolic pressure (during heart relaxation) and measured in millimeters of mercury. It is a fundamental cardiovascular vital sign, and its sustained elevation, known as hypertension, is a leading modifiable risk factor for stroke, coronary heart disease, heart failure, kidney disease, and premature death. Blood pressure is influenced by cardiac output, vascular resistance, blood volume, arterial stiffness, and neurohormonal regulation, and it varies with age, body weight, diet, physical activity, and genetic factors.
