Overview
Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease in which inflammation can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, from the mouth to the anus, most commonly the end of the small intestine and the beginning of the colon. The inflammation often extends through the full thickness of the bowel wall and can occur in patches, producing symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatigue, and weight loss, and complications including strictures, fistulas, malnutrition, and bowel obstruction. Its precise cause is not fully understood but is thought to involve an interplay of genetic susceptibility, immune dysregulation, and environmental triggers. Because diagnosis and monitoring rely heavily on imaging and on distinguishing Crohn's from other inflammatory conditions, research relevant to this topic includes updates on magnetic resonance enterography for diagnosing Crohn's disease and a model for identifying actionable computed-tomography findings in Crohn's patients presenting to the emergency department. Related work explores capsaicin as a potential adjuvant therapy for inflammatory bowel disease. Together these reflect diagnostic, imaging, and therapeutic perspectives on the condition. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the topic.
