Overview

Fishery Science is the study of fish populations, aquatic ecosystems, and the methods used to cultivate and harvest fish for human use. Research published in the International Journal of Aquaculture Research and Development addresses practical challenges in aquaculture development, particularly in African contexts. Published studies examine the integration of novel farming systems, such as combining snail cultivation with fish farming in Cameroon's Western Region. A significant focus involves optimizing fish nutrition through alternative feed ingredients, including investigations into replacing conventional fishmeal with locally available plant proteins like lima bean meal and pigeon pea seeds in diets for commercially important species such as Nile tilapia and African catfish. Additional research explores the dietary protein requirements necessary to support survival and growth during early life stages of indigenous cyprinid species. This work matters because it addresses food security and economic development in regions where aquaculture represents a vital protein source and livelihood opportunity. By identifying cost-effective, locally sourced feed alternatives and refining culture techniques for both established and underutilized species, fishery science research contributes to sustainable aquaculture practices that can be implemented by small-scale farmers and larger operations alike.
