Acute Myeloid Leukemia

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a type of cancer that affects the bone marrow and white blood cells. It occurs when abnormal cells, called myeloblasts, grow quickly in the bone marrow and interfere with the production of healthy red and white blood cells, as well as platelets. AML is a serious illness that requires immediate treatment, and in some cases, can be fatal. Treatment options include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, stem cell transplantation and targeted therapy. The prognosis and outcome of AML vary depending on the patient's age, overall health, and the type and stage of the cancer.
