Overview
Vitamin D deficiency is a state in which the body has insufficient vitamin D, a fat-soluble nutrient and hormone precursor essential for calcium absorption and bone mineralization, typically assessed by measuring serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D, or 25(OH)D. Vitamin D is obtained through skin synthesis on exposure to sunlight and from a limited number of foods and supplements, and prolonged deficiency can impair bone health, contributing to rickets in children and to reduced bone strength in adults. In the context of bone and mineral metabolism, vitamin D deficiency is studied for its effects on skeletal health and its associations with a range of clinical conditions. Research collected here evaluates 25(OH)D status across diverse patient groups, including people with type 2 diabetes, chronic liver disease, and oral lichen planus, as well as in children in care settings and in the context of bariatric surgery and pregnancy.
