Overview
Autoimmune diseases are conditions in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own healthy tissues, organs, or cells. Normally the immune system distinguishes self from foreign invaders, but in autoimmunity this tolerance breaks down, leading to chronic inflammation and tissue damage. These diseases can affect almost any organ system and include conditions such as type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and inflammatory bowel disease. Their development is shaped by an interplay of genetic susceptibility, immune dysregulation, and environmental triggers, and treatment is tailored to the specific disease and the systems it involves. Research published in International Journal of Clinical Microbiology examines several facets of autoimmunity and immune function. A review of autoimmune diseases considers the contributions of genes, inflammation, and environment to their onset, while a case report of a possible autoimmune polyglandular syndrome illustrates how more than one autoimmune process can affect a single patient. Related work on the laboratory diagnosis of immune thrombocytopenia and on immune-mediated conditions broadens the clinical and diagnostic picture. Together this peer-reviewed, open-access material reflects the journal's attention to immune mechanisms, including the dysregulated immune responses that underlie autoimmune disease and the laboratory approaches used to identify them.
