Overview
Human coronavirus 229E is one of the seasonal human coronaviruses, an alphacoronavirus that commonly causes mild upper respiratory tract infections such as the common cold, though it can lead to more serious illness in older adults and people with weakened immunity. It belongs to the broad virus family that also includes the betacoronaviruses responsible for SARS, MERS, and COVID-19. The International Journal of Coronaviruses publishes peer-reviewed, open-access research across this coronavirus family. Recent studies in the journal examine the 2019 novel coronavirus and COVID-19, including a narrative review of the disease, the molecular evolutionary characteristics of the novel coronavirus, the role of animals during the COVID-19 era, and cell therapy as an alternative approach for infection. Readers interested in coronavirus biology, evolution, transmission, and treatment will find research relevant to understanding how members of this family cause and spread disease.
