Overview

Physiology is the branch of biology concerned with the normal functions of living organisms and their parts, explaining how molecules, cells, tissues, organs, and integrated systems work and interact to sustain life. It examines processes such as respiration, circulation, digestion, metabolism, and neuromuscular activity, and the regulatory mechanisms, including homeostasis and feedback control, that maintain a stable internal environment in the face of changing demands. Spanning scales from molecular and cellular events to the coordinated behaviour of the whole organism, physiology provides the functional foundation on which the basic and clinical sciences rest, and it underpins the understanding of how function is altered in disease, a domain known as pathophysiology. Particular areas include exercise physiology, which studies the body's responses and adaptations to physical activity, muscular contraction, and recovery; cardiovascular physiology, including changes across the lifespan and reproductive states; and the physiology of organs and tissues such as adipose tissue and their roles in metabolism and disease. Dose-dependent and biochemical influences on bodily function are also examined, alongside the physiological basis of practices affecting health. Research relevant to this topic spans comparative and exercise physiology, muscular and cardiac function, the contribution of molecular and biochemical mechanisms to physiological regulation, and the relationship between normal function and its disturbance in clinical conditions.
