Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a cardiovascular condition caused by the narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries that supply oxygen and nutrients to the heart muscle, typically through the buildup of plaque. It is the leading cause of death worldwide and can produce chest pain, heart attack, and other serious complications, while early detection and management can substantially improve outcomes. Research on CHD integrates clinical cardiology, genetics, and lifestyle epidemiology. Studies of underlying mechanisms include polymorphisms in genes such as those encoding tissue factor and PPAR-alpha and their relationship to CHD risk in particular populations, as well as microRNA-based therapeutic strategies for ischemic heart disease.
