Overview

Cancer prevention is the body of scientific and clinical strategy aimed at reducing the incidence, morbidity, and mortality of cancer by interrupting carcinogenesis before invasive disease develops. It is conventionally organised into primary prevention, which targets modifiable risk factors and exposures such as tobacco, diet, infection, and lifestyle; secondary prevention through screening and early detection of premalignant or early lesions; and chemoprevention using pharmacological or nutritional agents to suppress tumour initiation and progression. The field draws on epidemiology to identify risk factors, on molecular biology to define mechanisms, and on implementation science to deliver population-level programmes. Peer-reviewed work relevant to this topic examines nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in colorectal cancer prevention, statins and lung cancer risk, cervical cancer screening uptake and awareness in different populations, dietary and lifestyle intervention against colorectal cancer, antioxidant phenolic compounds and nutraceuticals with putative chemopreventive activity, and complementary and alternative approaches to cancer prevention. These contributions integrate clinical oncology, nutrition, and public health to clarify how risk can be lowered and early disease intercepted across diverse settings and cancer types, an area in which the journal publishes peer-reviewed research.
