Overview

Prostate cancer is a malignancy that arises in the prostate gland, a part of the male reproductive system that surrounds the urethra and produces seminal fluid. It is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in men and ranges in behavior from slow-growing, indolent tumors that may never cause symptoms to aggressive forms that spread beyond the gland. Risk increases with age and is influenced by family history, genetics, and other factors. Detection often involves prostate-specific antigen testing, digital rectal examination, imaging, and biopsy, while management is tailored to disease stage and aggressiveness and may include active surveillance, surgery, radiation, hormonal therapy, chemotherapy, or immunotherapy. Research relevant to this topic in the journal addresses diagnosis, biomarkers, and tumor biology, including markers for significant or high-grade prostate cancer in elderly patients undergoing biopsy, the use of prostatic-fluid zinc-to-bromine ratios as a non-invasive screening approach, and analyses of trace-element content in the prostate gland and in adenocarcinoma tissue. Further studies examine a rare small-cell carcinoma of the prostate, gene polymorphisms associated with prostate cancer and other conditions, and broader questions of cancer prevention and complementary approaches. Across this work, early detection, accurate risk stratification, and an improved understanding of prostate tumor biology remain central concerns.
