Overview
Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a blockage of one or more arteries in the lungs, most commonly caused by a blood clot that has formed elsewhere in the body, typically in the deep veins of the legs, and traveled to the pulmonary circulation. By obstructing blood flow, PE reduces oxygenation of the blood and can strain the heart, producing symptoms such as breathlessness and chest pain and, in severe cases, life-threatening collapse. PE is part of the spectrum of venous thromboembolism and is an important consideration in respiratory and oncologic medicine, since cancer and its treatment can increase the risk of clot formation. Prompt diagnosis and treatment, including anticoagulation, thrombolysis, or surgery, are essential to improving outcomes. Research relevant to this topic examines rapid risk stratification in PE using biomarkers such as heart-type fatty acid-binding protein, case reports of drug-associated PE, and the duration of venous thromboembolism risk after orthopaedic surgery. Reported studies also address inherited bleeding and coagulation disorders, right atrial thrombus, and overlapping cardiopulmonary conditions including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease phenotypes, COVID-19 respiratory manifestations, and acute respiratory distress. Together these strands situate pulmonary embolism within the broader study of thrombosis, respiratory disease, and the cardiovascular complications that intersect with lung and cancer epidemiology.
