Overview
A lesion is any localized region of tissue whose structure or function has been altered by disease, injury, or developmental abnormality, ranging from microscopic cellular change to grossly visible masses. Lesions are classified by location, by whether they are benign or malignant, by their pathological process such as inflammation, infection, neoplasia, or degeneration, and by morphological features assessed through clinical examination, imaging, and histopathology. Characterizing a lesion involves determining its origin, extent, and biological behaviour, which guides diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. Research relevant to this area examines serrated and neoplastic lesions in colorectal carcinogenesis, intraepithelial and benign cervical lesions evaluated by immunohistochemical markers such as p16/INK4a and Ki-67, and lesions of lymphoid and ocular tissue characterized by cytology and imaging. Further work addresses choroidal and dermatological lesions, periapical lesions associated with systemic syndromes, and lesions arising in infectious and immunosuppressed contexts. The interpretation of lesions draws together pathology, oncology, imaging, and clinical correlation, with implications for early detection and management of malignancy and other disease. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research involving the characterization of lesions across tissues, including premalignant and neoplastic change, immunohistochemical evaluation, and the imaging and cytological assessment of lesions.
