Overview
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a disruption of normal brain function caused by an external mechanical force, such as a blow, jolt, or penetrating injury to the head, and ranges in severity from mild concussion to life-threatening injury. TBI is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, frequently resulting from falls, road traffic accidents, assaults, and sports injuries. The clinical picture depends on the mechanism, severity, and location of injury, and may include headache, confusion, dizziness, amnesia, loss of consciousness, and lasting difficulties with concentration, memory, mood, and behaviour. Beyond the immediate physical trauma, TBI carries significant psychological consequences and is associated with secondary injury processes such as oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, which are active areas of investigation. Care spans acute neurosurgical management, prediction of outcome and discharge disposition, neurorehabilitation, and attention to the medical and psychological sequelae that affect long-term recovery and quality of life. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to Medical and Psychological Trauma reflecting these themes, including studies on outcomes and prognostic factors of TBI in pediatric and adult patients, neurosurgical management of extradural hematoma, prediction of discharge disposition after traumatic injury, neuroprotection against oxidative injury, and the broader stress-related and dissociative responses that can accompany trauma.
