Overview
Conceptual models are abstract representations that describe the components, relationships, and processes of a system or idea in order to make it easier to understand, communicate, and reason about. Rather than reproducing every detail, a conceptual model captures the essential elements of a phenomenon and the connections between them, often in diagrammatic or schematic form, so that complex concepts can be structured, hypotheses framed, data interpreted, and predictions made. They are used across many disciplines, including the sciences, engineering, public health, education, and the social sciences, as tools for organising knowledge, guiding the design of studies and measurement instruments, and conveying information to specialists and non-specialists alike. In model-based research, conceptual models provide the foundation on which quantitative or computational models are subsequently built, ensuring that assumptions are made explicit and that the structure of a problem is clearly defined. Research within Model Based Research reflects this role, including work that compares measurement scales for assessing self-determination and quality of life in students with intellectual disabilities, an example of how conceptual frameworks underpin the construction and evaluation of measurement tools. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to conceptual modelling and model-based approaches to understanding complex systems.
