Overview
Ocular disease is a broad category encompassing any pathological condition affecting the structures of the eye and its adnexa, from the anterior segment (cornea, conjunctiva, lens) through the vitreous, retina, choroid, and optic nerve. Conditions are commonly grouped by mechanism and anatomy: glaucomatous optic neuropathy driven by intraocular pressure and retinal ganglion cell loss; cataract arising from lens protein aggregation; retinal vascular disorders such as branch and central retinal vein occlusion; inflammatory and autoimmune entities including uveitis and Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease; nutritional and developmental disorders such as vitamin A deficiency and retinopathy of prematurity; and neuro-ophthalmic disease affecting the optic chiasm and visual pathways. Many of these conditions threaten vision through irreversible neurodegeneration, making early detection, intraocular pressure control, immunomodulation, and timely surgical or pharmacological intervention central to preserving sight. Epidemiology, clinical profiling, and access to care also shape outcomes, particularly in underserved populations. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research spanning the diagnosis, pathophysiology, and management of ocular disease, including studies of retinal vein occlusion, uveitic and inflammatory conditions, neuro-ophthalmic chiasmal lesions, intraocular pressure and ganglion cell function, and ocular manifestations of systemic and nutritional disorders.
