Overview

Cell transplantation is a therapeutic technique in which living cells are introduced into a recipient to replace, repair, or supplement damaged or diseased tissue. The transplanted cells may come from a donor (allogeneic), from the patient's own body (autologous), or from cultured and specialized cell sources, and they can include hematopoietic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, or cells derived from induced pluripotent stem cells. One of the most established applications is hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, used to reconstitute the blood and immune system in patients with certain cancers and disorders of the bone marrow. Cell transplantation is also a cornerstone of regenerative medicine, with research exploring its potential to treat conditions such as neurological injury, diabetes, and degenerative diseases. Research in this journal's network has examined hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, including the effects of donor matching and the management of complications, the use of pluripotent stem cells and biocompatible scaffolds to model neural recovery, mobilization of peripheral blood stem cells, and the ethics of stem cell research and therapy. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to cell and stem cell transplantation within the broad scope of Organ Transplantation.
