Overview

Pharmacology is the science of drugs and their interactions with living systems, encompassing how compounds produce their effects and how the body handles them. It is conventionally divided into pharmacodynamics, the study of drug mechanisms and effects on targets such as receptors and enzymes, and pharmacokinetics, the study of absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion. The field guides the discovery, evaluation, and rational use of therapeutic agents, balancing efficacy against toxicity and safety. Research connected to this topic includes network-pharmacology strategies predicting therapeutic targets of beta-sitosterol in diabetic retinopathy and of an essential-oil combination in anxiety and skin disorders, as well as the discovery and development of immunoglobulin-based therapeutic agents. Other studies examine drug-design progress across in silico, in vitro, and in vivo research, hypolipidemic and antihypertensive drug effects in experimental and clinical settings, and the psychopharmacology of tryptamine compounds. Further work addresses structure-activity relationships of natural products such as xanthones as kinase inhibitors, dose-response of plant-derived saponins, in vitro models for cardiotoxicity testing, and the efficacy of dietary fatty acids on lipid profiles. Spanning mechanism, target identification, safety assessment, and natural-product and clinical pharmacology, this field provides the scientific basis for developing and using medicines effectively and safely.
