Overview
Subtropical regions are the zones of the Earth that lie between the tropics and the temperate latitudes, roughly between 23.5 and 40 degrees north and south of the equator. They are characterized by hot summers and mild to cool winters, with frost being uncommon in many areas, and they encompass a wide variety of climates, from humid subtropical zones with substantial rainfall to drier Mediterranean and semi-arid environments. These conditions support diverse vegetation and agriculture, including many fruit, grain, and forage crops, and shape distinctive ecosystems and patterns of human settlement. From a public-health and disease perspective, the warm climates of subtropical and adjacent tropical regions can favor the survival and transmission of certain pathogens and the vectors that carry them, making these areas important in the study of infectious and vector-borne diseases. They are also significant for agriculture, water resources, and the effects of climate change, since shifts in temperature and rainfall can alter crop suitability, pest pressure, and disease distribution. Within the journal's coverage of Tropical Diseases and Medicine, subtropical regions provide context for understanding how geography and climate influence health and disease. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to subtropical and tropical environments and their implications for health, agriculture, and disease.
