Overview

Abnormal uterine bleeding, or AUB, is a medical condition that refers to uterine bleeding that is irregular, abnormal or excessive in nature. It is a common concern among women, especially those in their reproductive years. Although AUB doesn't necessarily indicate any serious medical issue, it is important to consult a healthcare professional if you experience it. AUB can occur due to a range of factors, including hormonal imbalances, fibroids and polyps, infections, endometrial atrophy or cancer, pregnancy complications, and certain medications. Proper diagnosis of the underlying causes is essential for effective treatment. Symptoms of AUB can vary depending on the underlying cause, but common signs include spotting between periods, heavy or prolonged menstrual cycles, bleeding after sex, and bleeding after menopause. These symptoms can cause inconvenience, and in severe cases, can lead to anemia and other complications. Treatment for AUB is tailored to the underlying cause. Hormonal imbalances may be addressed with hormone therapy, while fibroids and polyps may require surgery. Medication can also be prescribed to control the bleeding. In summary, abnormal uterine bleeding is a common condition among women, but it could be an indication of a serious medical issue. It is important to consult a healthcare professional if you experience AUB, and appropriate diagnosis and treatment can help to alleviate symptoms and prevent complications.
