Overview
Women's mental health services refer to the organized provision of psychological and psychiatric care designed to address the mental-health needs of women, often integrated with reproductive and general healthcare to reflect the connections between mental wellbeing, the reproductive life course, and social context. These services span prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, and support for conditions ranging from depression and anxiety to mood disturbances associated with the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, the postpartum period, and menopause, as well as the psychological consequences of adverse experiences such as sexual and gender-based violence. A central concern of this field is equitable access, since many women, particularly those who are marginalized, face substantial barriers to obtaining appropriate care. Research highlights obstacles confronting groups such as sexual minorities and survivors of sexual violence in reaching comprehensive care, underscoring the need for services that are accessible, confidential, and responsive to diverse circumstances. Effective provision combines clinical treatment with psychosocial support, health information, and the protection of sexual and reproductive rights, often coordinated across primary care, specialist mental-health, and community settings. Attention is also given to life-stage transitions, including the emotional dimensions of menopause. By aligning care with the biological, psychological, and social determinants of women's mental health, these services aim to improve wellbeing, autonomy, and quality of life across the lifespan.
