Overview
Histopathology is the study of the microscopic structure of tissues to identify and characterize disease. Tissue samples obtained through biopsy or surgery are processed, sectioned, and examined under a microscope so that cellular and structural changes can be detected and interpreted. It is a cornerstone of diagnosis, particularly in the evaluation of tumors and other lesions, where the microscopic appearance of cells and tissue architecture guides classification, distinguishes benign from malignant processes, and informs treatment decisions across many areas of medicine. Research relevant to histopathology includes case studies and analyses in which microscopic examination is central to diagnosis, such as the malignant transformation of a neurofibroma, an inverting papilloma of the lacrimal sac, a hemangioma of the buccal mucosa presenting as a dermoid cyst, a rare lipomatous neoplasm of the thigh, and series describing common tumors arising in unusual locations. These reports illustrate how tissue examination resolves diagnostic questions and characterizes disease. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to histopathology and the microscopic diagnosis of disease.
