Overview

Thyroid hormone replacement therapy is the use of synthetic thyroid hormone, most commonly levothyroxine, to restore normal circulating thyroid hormone levels in people whose thyroid gland produces too little. It is the standard treatment for hypothyroidism, whether arising from autoimmune disease, thyroid surgery, radioactive iodine treatment, or other causes, and it is essential after thyroidectomy for Thyroid Cancer, where lifelong hormone supplementation maintains metabolic function and, in some protocols, suppresses thyroid-stimulating hormone to reduce cancer recurrence risk. Thyroid hormones regulate metabolism, energy, growth, mood, and cardiovascular function, so adequate replacement supports normal physiology, while dosing must be monitored to avoid under- or over-treatment. The journal Thyroid Cancer publishes peer-reviewed research on the diagnosis, surgical and radioactive-iodine management, and long-term outcomes of thyroid malignancies, the clinical context in which hormone replacement after thyroidectomy is routinely required. Related work in the journal addresses treatment outcomes in differentiated Thyroid Cancer following surgery and radioiodine, and radiation safety after radioiodine ablation. This page gathers open-access scholarship relevant to Thyroid Cancer care, within which thyroid hormone replacement is a continuing component of patient management.
