Reproductive Cells
Reproductive cells are cells that are necessary for the transmission of genetic information from one organism to its offspring. They are essential for the continuation of species and maintain evolutionary diversity. Reproductive cells are haploid and are formed by a process called meiosis. They include sperm and egg cells in animals, and spores in plants. When two reproductive cells combine, they form a diploid zygote which will develop into a new organism. Therefore, reproductive cells are essential for the production of new individuals and are thus the source of heredity.
