Effects of Alcoholism

Alcoholism is a disease of the body, mind and spirit characterized by physical dependence on and/or excessive consumption of alcohol. Long-term alcohol abuse can lead to a wide variety of physical and mental health problems, including liver disease, neuropathy, depression and anxiety, impaired functioning of the immune system, cardiovascular disease, anemia and psychological changes. People with alcoholism may also be at increased risk for a number of other illnesses such as cancers, stroke and diabetes. Alcoholism can also increase risk of accidents, violent crimes and suicide. The physical and mental effects of alcoholism can be devastating and may even lead to death. Treatment for alcoholism may include medications, psychotherapy and rehabilitation programs. It is important to seek help as soon as possible to reduce the risks and long-term damage associated with the condition.
