Folate Deficiency

Folate deficiency is a vitamin B12 deficiency which occurs when the body lacks sufficient levels of folic acid or folate, an essential B vitamin. It can cause anemia, diarrhea, ulceration of the tongue, poor growth, skin or mucosal lesions, confusion, forgetfulness, and irritability. It may cause serious health problems, such as an increased risk of neural tube defects in newborns, as well as reduced immunity and mental health problems. Folate is important for DNA replication, cell division, and the production of red and white blood cells, as well as for other metabolic processes. Folate is found in dark green vegetables, orange juice, legumes, grains, and fortified grains, and can be taken as a supplement. Folate deficiency is a common problem and is preventable through adequate dietary intake and supplementation.
