COVID-19-Induced Changes in the Fibrin Network of Pulmonary and Renal Microthrombi

Abstract:

Background

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection often causes coagulation disorders that affect highly vascularized organs, such as the lungs and kidneys.

Objective

The objective of this study was to report the histopathological findings of variations in the fibrin pattern of pulmonary and renal microthrombi in patients who died from SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Methods

Minimally invasive autopsies were performed on 40 patients to collect lung (n=40) and kidney (n=16) tissue samples. Histochemical and immunohistochemical staining techniques were used for histopathological analyses. Premortem laboratory data were obtained ...

Delving into the Ideas of Charles Darwin: A Study of His Pre-Beagle Musings, Beagle Expedition, and Subsequent Developments

Abstract:

Charles Darwin's exploration of the Galápagos Islands in 1835 and his subsequent formulation of the theory of evolution in 1839 were significantly influenced by his observations of land-birds, including finches, larks, owls, and mockingthrushes. Despite a primary focus on geology during his voyage on the HMS Beagle, Darwin meticulously documented various species in his field notebooks. Early observations during his youth at Edinburgh University and the Beagle expedition reflected Darwin's growing curiosity about species variation. However, it was not until his return to England and his interaction with ornithologist John Gould that Darwin began to recognize the significance of the finches he had observed in the Galápagos. This review synthesizes existing literature on Darwin's transition from geological interests to his groundbreaking insights into evolution. By examining primary sources, historical interpretations, and contemporary analyses, this paper highligh...

On Tesla-inspired Extended Quantum-Holographic Framework for Reprogramming Macro-Quantum Correlations of Individual and Collective Consciousness

Abstract:

Nikola Tesla's visions and inventions realized in his controlled altered states of consciousness were considered previously as manifestations of his meditative insights within an extended framework of quantum-holographic macroquantum correlations of individual & collective consciousness. This Tesla-inspired paper now focuses on related psychosomatic aspects of quantum entropy & entanglement, and consequences on the usually observable biological arrow of time & spiritual-informational time reversal. Finally we discuss spiritual-informational implications for free will and individual and collective consciousness reprogramming.

Impact of Climate Change on Public Health in Rwanda

Abstract:

Rwanda is a small Central African country. A land with thousands of hills and mountains. It is a low-income country and one of Africa's fastest-growing economies. It is home to a variety of ecosystems, such as mountainous rainforests, gallery forests, savanna woodlands, wetlands, aquatic forests, and agroecosystems. From rising temperatures to changing rainfall patterns, the hidden dangers of climate change are unmasking themselves in the form of various health risks. Every year, many deaths, bodily injuries, and house collapses, among other repercussions, are documented as detrimental effects of climate change events on public health. This article delves into the intricate relationship between climate change and public health in Rwanda, exploring the adverse effects it has on vulnerable communities. By shedding light on this pressing issue, we can better understand the urgency of taking action to mitigate the impact of climate change on public health as well as p...

Protection Side Chain of Lysine by Host-Affinity Molecules during Solid Phase Peptide Synthesis in Aqueous Phase

Abstract:

A new approach to protecting the side chain of lysine during solid-phase peptide synthesis in an aqueous environment is explored. The objectives of this study are twofold: 1) to reduce the consumption of chemical solvents in peptide synthesis, and 2) to lower the costs associated with lysine side chain protection. In an effort to minimize the usage of organic solvents in amino acid side chain protection for peptide synthesis,18-crown-6 molecule (18C6) was introduced as protective agent for Lysine (Lys) side chain protection. 18C6 is utilized to protect ε-amino group of on side chain of Lys in peptide synthesis. 18C6 features cavity at its center. The 18C6 molecules exhibit a unique and distinctive host-guest affinity towards ε-amino group on side chain of Lys. 18C6 bind to Lys side chain through hydrogen bonds with ε-amino group of Lys, eliminating the need for chemical reactions in organic solvents to attach protective molecules to the side chain groups. This ...

Predictors of COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy in North-Central Nigeria

Abstract:

COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy has emerged as a major challenge to global efforts to control the pandemic, particularly in Nigeria, where hesitancy to other effective vaccines such as polio and measles has been widely reported. Several individual, societal, and structural factors contribute to this behaviour and prevent the effectiveness of COVID-19 prevention efforts.

Objectives

This study sought to identify the predictors of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in the seven states of North-Central, Nigeria.

Methods

A population-based cross-sectional online survey was conducted among residents using a semi-structured questionnaire adapted from the WHO SAGE vaccine hesitancy scale and distributed via social media networks over 8-weeks.

Genotypic Diversity among Salmonella Typhi Isolated from Children Living in Informal Settlements in Nairobi, Kenya

Abstract:

The persistence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Salmonella Typhi (S. Typhi) is a challenge especially in regions where typhoid is endemic. Surveillance of circulating genotypes of MDR S. Typhi is crucial in typhoid acute cases and carriers. This study aimed to investigate genotypic diversity of S. Typhi from symptomatic and asymptomatic children in endemic settings in Nairobi, Kenya. Symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals’ ≤ 16 years were recruited at four health facilities and tested for typhoid through stool cultures. The S. Typhi isolates were subjected to antibiotic susceptibility testing to investigate multidrug resistance. The MDR S. Typhi isolates’ DNA was extracted and illumina sequenced. Raw reads were de novo assembled and analyzed by pathogen-watch. From the 90 seque...

Prevalence and Antifungal Susceptibility of Candida species from patients attending Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, Nigeria

Abstract:

The development of medical therapy and patients profile has led to a rise in the incidence of nosocomial fungal infection. The frequency of candidiasis has surged worldwide, and the prevalent of healthcare diseases are now Candida species. Candida species causes a range of human infections known as Candidiasis. The non-albicans Candida (NAC) species have recently superseded Candida albicans as significant opportunistic pathogens. The study was conducted to determine the prevalence and antifungal susceptibility of Candida species isolated from various Clinical samples in Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt, Nigeria. A total of 206 clinical specimens from male and female patients of all ages were sampled in the Department of Microbiology, Rivers State University Teaching Ho...

Health-Related Quality of Life Perception Among Older Persons with Non-Communicable Diseases in Primary Healthcare Facilities: A Qualitative Inquiry

Abstract:

Background

The understanding of older persons with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) regarding health well-being is paramount and can translate to increased self-efficiency, independence, and enhanced well-being. However, little is known about older persons' understanding of the concept of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in Uganda. The study explored perceptions and unveiled understanding of older persons with NCDs on HRQoL in central Uganda.

Methods

This exploratory qualitative study design involved 23 participants recruited from selected Primary healthcare facilities in Central Uganda. Thematic analysis using an inductive approach generated themes that informed the study's qualitative findings.
