The Identification of Somatic Mutations in Interferon-G Signal Molecules in Human Uterine Leiomyosarcoma

Abstract:

Human uterine leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is neoplastic malignancy that typically arises in tissues of mesenchymal origin. The identification of novel molecular mechanism leading to human uterine LMS formation and the establishment of new therapies has been hampered by several critical points. We earlier reported that mice with a homozygous deficiency for proteasome beta subunit 9 (PSMB9)/b1i, an interferon (IFN)-g inducible factor, spontaneously develop uterine LMS. The use of research findings of the experiment with mouse model has been successful in increasing our knowledge and understanding of how alterations, in relevant oncogenic, tumour suppressive, and signaling pathways directly impact sarcomagenesis. The IFN-g pathway is important for control of tumour growth and invasion and, has been implicated in several malignant tumours. In this study, experiments with human tissues revealed a defective PSMB9/b1i expression in human uterine LMS that was tr...

Outcome in Patients with Spontaneous Primary Intracranial Hemorrhage who underwent Craniotomy Affiliation

Abstract:

Background:

Spontaneous primary intracranial hemorrhage or known as intracerebral hypertensive hemorrhage consist of 15 to 20% of all stroke, is one of the major health problems among healthy and productive workforce in any countries.

Methods:

A retrospective study was conducted in a dedicated Neurosurgical Centre at the Hospital Sungai Buloh, Malaysia. The study was conducted for admission within a year period, in the year 2013 with 6 months follow-up. A total of 35 patients were studied.

Results:

The mean age was 52.8 years old (31-77 years old). A total of 29 patients (82.9%) were presented with basal ganglia hemorrhage, 4 with cerebral lobar hemorrhage (11.4%) and 2 with cerebellar hemorrhage (5.7%). The surgical mortalit...

Arteriovenous Fistula in a Patient with Aberrant Radial Artery

Abstract:

Arteriovenous fistula is the most commonly used vascular access in patients on maintenance hemodialysis. Operating surgeon has to be aware about the normal anatomy of vessels as well as variations in the course of the vessels. Here wereport a case of radiocephalic arteriovenous fistula constructed in aberrant radial artery. This is the first case of arteriovenous fistula with aberrant radial artery to be reported in world literature.

Early Stressful Life Events, which Caused Depression Probably are Associated with the Development of Dementia

Abstract:

Recently the results of a large, prospective population study, important for the diagnosis and treatment of dementia were presented 1. The authors emphasize their conclusion already in the title of the paper and state “Stressful life events are not associated with the development of dementia”. They discuss many studies, which lead to an opposing conclusion, namely that there is the causal relationship between stressful, adverse life events and the risk of dementia, however they quote also two other papers leading to a denial of such a relationship.

A Successful Vancomycin Treatment of Multidrug-Resistant MRSA-Associated Canine Pyoderma

Abstract:

Case Report

This report describes a case of diffuse pyoderma in a 10-year-old female dog with hypothyroidism. A previous treatment, without an early diagnosis, including cephalosporin associated with prednisolon resulted to be unsuccessfully. After clinical and microbiological examination in our laboratories, a diagnosis of methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-associated pyoderma was made. The antimicrobial susceptibility testing evidenced many resistances and susceptibility of the strain only to vancomycin and linezolid. A new therapy against hypothyroidism and associated with an appropriate antimicrobial (vancomycin) treatment, improved and resolved the infection.

Clinical Significance

To our knowledge, this is the first case of canine pyoderma caused by a strain of MRSA with a such severe multiresi...

Rare cause of gastric varices secondary to an isolated left gastric vein stenosis

Abstract:

A 69 year old female with a history of pancreatic mucinous cystadenoma (treated with Whipple procedure) and recently presumed liver cirrhosis presented to the hospital with melanotic stools. The source of the bleeding was initially thought to be secondary to upper gastrointestinal (GI) varices due to portal hypertension from the liver disease. Upper endoscopy found no active bleeding and confirmed grade 2 gastric varices with gastric wall edema. Due to persistent symptoms and inability to locate the exact source, she went to the operating room for possible transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) but was not found to have any porto-systemic gradient. Instead, she was found to have an isolated stenosis of the left gastric vein, which was treated with balloon angioplasty and eventual splenectomy. Upper GI varices usually occur due to portal hypertension from liver disease. Extra hepatic causes are much rarer. We report a case of upper GI bleed from gastr...

Prevalence of Impulse Control Disorders among Adult Filipino Patients with Idiopathic Parkinson’s Disease seen at Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center

Abstract:

Background:

Impulse Control Disorders (ICDs) are characterized as pathologicalbehavioral patterns of excess impulsivity which may result as part of the non-motor complications of Parkinson’s disease (PD). These significantly affect the patient’s overall quality of life and have impact on their care givers, as well. Currently, the prevalence of ICDs among adult Filipino patients with Parkinson’s disease is unknown and less reported.

Objectives:

The study is intended to determine the prevalence of ICDs and its severityamong adult Filipino patients with idiopathic Parkinson’s disease seen at Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center. Specifically, this study will identify risk factors and the clinical correlates to these patients.

The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of adding ‘don’t know’ to the original ‘true’ or ‘false’ response option. It was assumed that this modification would provide insight into the reasons underlying incorrect responses and could distinguish between misconceptions and knowledge gaps. To investigate this, carers (care home carers and informal carers) and members of the general population were recruited. The results showed that percentage correct responses was lower than previously reported, suggesting potential inflation of knowledge by guesses without the ‘don’t know’ option. Moreover, care-home workers were more likely to select the incorrect response than ‘don’t know’ compared to informal carers for several items related to the earlier stages of AD, suggesting a higher level of misconceptions around this ...
Read Article

Childhood Somatic Complaints: Relationships with Child Emotional Functioning and Parental Factors

Abstract:

<abstract>
Many schoolchildren experience somatic complaints such as headaches, abdominal pain and fatigue. The aim of the current research is to test the full model of previously found associations between negative affect and somatic complaints in parents and children. Participants were 199 children (aged 8-13, 47% boys) and their parents (aged 31-61, mostly mothers (87%). Self-reports of children and parents on worry, anxiety, depression and somatic complaints were used and parents’ reactions to children’s emotions wereassessed. The results of the study show that childhood negative affect and parental somatic complaints are positively associated with childhood somatic complaints. In turn, childhood negative affect is related to children’s worrying and to parents’ responses to children’s emotions. The more anxious or depressed children felt, the more they worried.
