Journal identifiers
An identifier makes the journal citable and unambiguous. It is a registration rather than an assessment of the journal.

02 · DOI registration
Persistent article identifiers
Every article is registered with Crossref under the DOI prefix 10.14302, so a citation resolves to a permanent address and continues to resolve if the article ever moves.
Crossref registration also distributes the article’s metadata — title, authors, affiliations, abstract, date, issue, pages and reference list — to every service that reads Crossref. That distribution is what makes an article findable in many places at once.
What DOI registration is, and what it is for
Crossref registration is a persistent-identifier and metadata service. It gives each article a stable address and pushes its metadata outward.
Selective journal-level indexing is decided database by database, and section 05 below records where this journal stands.

Metadata harvesting
The journal’s records are available for harvesting over OAI-PMH, the protocol aggregators and repositories use to collect metadata in bulk.

04 · Discovery
Where articles can be found
Every article is open access with no login, so it is available to any service that crawls the open web or reads Crossref metadata.
- The journal site. Every article has a permanent page carrying the full text, the PDF and the machine-readable metadata.
- Crossref. The registered record for each article, and its reference list, are available through the Crossref API to anyone who queries it.
- OAI-PMH. Aggregators and institutional repositories can harvest the journal’s metadata in bulk from the endpoint above.
- Web search and scholarly search services. Article pages are open and crawlable, with no login between a crawler and the full text.
A search service listing an article shows that the service reached that page. The journal’s own registrations are set out in section 05.

Verified journal-level indexing
Selective indexing is a decision a database makes about a journal as a whole, after assessing it. The table below carries this journal’s current position.

Long-term preservation
This journal’s content is committed to Portico, a not-for-profit digital-preservation archive run by ITHAKA (the organization behind JSTOR). As articles are deposited they enter Portico’s permanent archive, so the scholarly record stays available for the long term — even if a title one day ceases to publish.

07 · Funder deposit
Deposit in a funder repository
Eligible NIH-funded manuscripts may be deposited individually in PubMed Central through the NIH Manuscript Submission System (NIHMS).
Depositing an individual manuscript places that manuscript in the repository. Journal-level inclusion in PubMed Central or MEDLINE is assessed by the National Library of Medicine against its own criteria, and section 05 above records this journal’s confirmed registrations.
Authors publishing under a funder mandate should share those requirements with the editorial office early, so licensing, the accepted-manuscript version and the repository deposit can be arranged together.
